How it started
Our story begins in 2004, with three physics students at the University of Oslo. Focused on exploring sound waves under water, they got an idea that would change the world of audio technology forever. What if they could create a super-microphone that could separate audible sound from undesired noise?
Initially, they envisioned this technology as a game-changer for broadcasting, particularly for sports matches. But when players and referees proved less than enthusiastic, the team knew they needed to explore other possibilities. That's when they discovered the potential for intelligence units and the defense sector.
Building on the system’s ability to provide live visualization of audible events, they found that their products could track drones based on the sound they emitted. This led to the creation of the world's first passive, sound-based drone detector, which now protects people, assets, and allies around the globe.
But the possibilities didn't stop there. The team soon recognized the potential of their technology to monitor almost anything emitting sound, specifically in the industrial sector. By combining the acoustic monitoring sensor with advanced machine learning, early signs of failure in machinery and equipment could suddenly be detected long before traditional monitoring systems would pick them up.
Today, what began as a student project, has evolved into a thriving company with passionate employees living in four different countries. Company staff still includes two of the original founders. At Squarehead, we're committed to pushing the boundaries of what's possible in spatial audio technology, and we're excited to continue innovating for years to come.
